THE NONA STORY
Nona Wear was the initial collaboration of old art school friends Gabriel Marshall and Sally Bolton, before Gabriel took over the running of the business in 2024.
After becoming mothers, they shared a simple dream; to create beautiful, inclusive clothing that felt easy and nurturing to wear but didn't harm the earth.
Nona was created with the vision to support women pre and postnatally through the clothes they wear. To assist women in feeling beautiful with pieces cut to fit and flatter almost any body shape, that feel soft to touch and weightless against the skin. Starting with our staple Grace Dress this evolved in to a small capsule collection. Our clothing is designed for all stages of life and is not pregnancy specific but each piece naturally supports breast feeding, has deep pockets and can be worn day or night. All fabrics are free from chemicals, hand woven and naturally dyed with plants by artisan dyers before being sewn and completed by our small production studio in Bangalore.
Alongside the running of Nona Wear, Gabriel, also works as an Ayurvedic postpartum care consultant. Both ventures have been built around motherhood so it feels vital to create a model that promotes kindness and compassion within a work environment so this is transferred in to each wearable piece.
"My aim as a female led business is is to support other women in business, utilising the skills of working mothers in India and the UK. I am committed to working closely with our fabric suppliers and makers as well as our small production team. We make small batches at a time to minimise waste and use cottons and linens that are organic or very low in pesticide use where the fibre is almost entirely naturally organic as well as using fibres that rely on no or very little water irrigation. We make sure dyes are natural so there are no chemicals involved in the production of our clothing and in fact hold gentle and beautiful supportive power from the medicinal plant dyes that add an additional layer of support for our wearers. My aim is to bring some of the healing aspects of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian holistic healthcare system, in to our clothing".
